Guide to Hiking the Tongariro Alpine Crossing
The Guide to hiking the Tongariro Alpine Crossing is a world-renowned trek, but it’s not a “walk in the park” (as many people think). You are walking through a harsh alpine environment, and conditions can change dramatically from hour to hour. This is why it’s always important to be well prepared and have a guide when you walk this trail unless you are an experienced alpine hiker and have the proper gear.
Hiking the Tongariro Crossing is an experience that is best enjoyed with a local Guide to ensure your safety. Guided hikes will provide you with all the necessary gear and knowledge to make this trek a truly memorable one. This includes safety information on alpine weather and how to avoid common dangers on the trek such as avalanche and volcanic risk.
Everything You Need to Know Before Hiking the Tongariro Alpine Crossing
Once on the track you will pass around the edge of Central Crater, then climb a short distance to Blue Lake which is a beautiful cold acidic lake that was once filled with flowing lava. It is Tapu (sacred) so be respectful and don’t touch, enter or eat here. From here it is a short and easy climb up to the top of North Crater.
Once at the top you will be greeted with spectacular views of Mount Ngauruhoe and Mount Tongariro. From here you can see the three iconic Emerald Lakes which are a strikingly vivid green against the burnt tan volcanic landscape. The track then descends to the site of the old Ketetehai Shelter where you will see that minerals have stained the rocks here.
