IG for Long-Term Investing Review
While IG does not qualify as a discount broker, its extensive educational resources make it an excellent choice for those interested in building their investment skills. From free IG Academy courses to weekly Market Trends videos and live webinars, the broker covers topics geared towards investors of all experience levels. Additionally, IG provides research insights and a comprehensive news hub that highlights the most influential market catalysts.
IG for Long-Term Investing offers an extensive range of markets and trading instruments, including more than 11,000 shares and investment trusts, 2,000 ETFs and several popular foreign exchange pairs. The firm also supports CFDs, which allow you to speculate on the direction of a market without owning the underlying asset. Moreover, IG’s extensive research tools provide valuable insights into the market, such as sentiment indicators and economic calendars.
IG for Long-Term Investing: Opportunities and Challenges
Another notable feature is a new option to invest in five managed IG Smart Portfolios, which are designed for different risk appetites. The portfolios are automatically rebalanced to reflect the changing market, allowing you to get more exposure to your chosen theme without the hassle of managing your own funds.
IG’s fees are competitive, with the average spread on EUR/USD during my testing coming in at 0.98. Nevertheless, the firm does not offer commission-free trades on US shares and charges a quarterly custody fee of PS24 per quarter (PS96 a year). That said, if you make three or more trades each quarter, these fees are waived. IG also does not pay interest on cash balances, unlike competitors such as eToro and Hargreaves Lansdown.
