The decline of MMORPGs was blamed on several factors, including new gaming trends like free to play games and MOBAs that lured in players. But the genre has seen a small resurgence lately and is once again attracting dedicated fans who are willing to put in the time to play their favorite titles.

The story of the MMORPG is a long one that begins in the early days of computers when 3D graphics were still pipe dreams and high speed Internet was nothing more than a dial up connection. Some of the earliest MMORPGs used text to create virtual worlds, where players could type in commands to explore and battle. These were known as Multi-User Dungeons (MUDs) and they were a predecessor to the modern MMO.

In the early 90s, Richard Garriott’s Ultima series was released and pioneered graphical online role playing. The next big step forward came in 1996 and 1997 with the release of Meridian 59 and Ultima Online. Both were massively multiplayer games that allowed players to create and customize their characters, engage in player versus player combat, and host guilds.
